Cycle from Kyoto to the Sea and Discover Japan's Timeless "Mackerel Highway"

Embark on a journey from Kyoto to the Sea – and from the present into the past – as you cycle along the Sabakaido, one of Japan’s most historic and scenic roads. This tour brings to life the rich history of the "Mackerel Highway," an ancient route that once connected the imperial capitals of Nara and Kyoto to the vibrant port town of Obama. Over the centuries, Buddhist monks, samurai lords, fish merchants, and even the first elephant to set foot in Japan have traveled this storied path. Today, the Sabakaido remains largely untouched by modernity. Its mountainous terrain, free from cars and urban sprawl, makes it perfect for cyclists seeking a serene and immersive experience of rural Japan. As you ride past sparkling rivers, charming villages, and lush forests, you’ll encounter locals, savor fresh country cuisine, stay in traditional accommodations, and delve into the unique culture that has thrived here for generations. Our flexible itinerary offers a range of outdoor and cultural activities, including sea kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), trekking, canyoning, fishing, and Zen meditation. Although Obama is no longer the bustling port it once was, it remains the heart of a thriving fishing industry. You'll have the chance to board a fishing boat, observe fishermen at work, witness a traditional auction, and taste the renowned local seafood.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Cycling Tour of Kyoto

Kyoto is a city made for cycling. With its narrow, picturesque streets, tranquil paths along scenic waterways, and compact layout, it’s the ideal way to explore the city. Your journey begins at the historic Imperial Palace, where a brief orientation sets the stage. From there, you'll ride through the palace’s spacious grounds before venturing into Kyoto’s rich cultural landscape. Along the way, you'll see iconic landmarks as well as hidden gems—always taking the most scenic and least trafficked routes. While the itinerary can be tailored to your preferences, typical stops include Shimogamo Shrine, the Silver Pavilion(Ginkaku-ji), the Philosopher’s Path, Nanzen-ji Temple, and the historic Demachiyanagi Market—once the starting point of the ancient Saba Kaido. For those interested, options for shopping or cultural experiences, such as a traditional tea ceremony, can be arranged.
Accommodation Options: A variety of Western Hotels & Traditional Japanese Inns
Total Cycling Distance: Approximately 17 km

Day 2 : Cycling Into the Countryside

Begin your day with a scenic train ride from Demachiyanagi Station along one of Kyoto’s most beautiful railway lines. At the final stop, Kurama, you'll hike to the hilltop temple of Kuramadera, then descend by cable car, taking in sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. Next, you'll saddle up and embark on a challenging but rewarding climb to the top of Hanase Pass. After the ascent, enjoy a long, winding descent that takes you through a timeless landscape of thatched-roof villages and terraced rice paddies-a glimpse into Japan’s rural past.
Accommodation options: Luxury traditional Inn, Riverside Glamping with Barbecue and Sauna, Rustic Country Inn
Total Cycling Distance: Approximately 34 km

Day 3 : Cycling to the Sea

Today’s ride leads you through more breathtaking rural landscapes, ascending a steep mountain pass that rewards you with stunning views before descending to the ancient seaport of Obama by the Sea. Part way up you will dismount to hike over the pass on foot, following a segment of the original Saba Kaido trail through primeval forest. After a winding descent you’ll stop at a beautifully restored farmhouse for lunch and visit both a serene ancient temple and a historic shrine, each over 1,300 years old.
Accommodation: Traditional Machiya Townhouse
Total Cycling Distance: approx. 46 km

Day 4 : Exploring the Seaport of Obama

The day begins before dawn as you board a small fishing boat to witness local fishermen reeling in their nets. Afterward, enjoy a brief tour of a sato-umi, coastal areas where human activity has enhanced biodiversity and marine productivity, similar to the balance found in sato-yama. If you prefer to sleep in, you can instead head to the docks a bit later to watch the unloading of the catch and the lively auction that follows. Following a hearty traditional breakfast at a local fishermen’s favorite spot, enjoy a leisurely cycling tour around Obama. Highlights include visits to the historic Geisha district and a beautifully restored sea captain’s home, now a charming café. In the afternoon, embark on a scenic boat cruise along the dramatic cliffs of Obama’s coastline, with a stop at the famous Sotomo Arches—natural formations sculpted by the sea.
Accommodation: Traditional Machiya Townhouse
Total Cycling Distance: approx. 12 km

Day 5 : An Outing with Local Fishermen, and a Ride to an Edo-period Post Town

Today’s journey takes you on a scenic cycling route along rivers and rice paddies, leading to Kumagawa Juku, a charming post town that has preserved the atmosphere of the Edo period. Your first stop is Choeiji, a serene temple nestled in the forest and draped in moss, offering a peaceful glimpse into Japan’s spiritual heritage. From there, you will continue to the ancient hamlet of Miyagawa, where your guide will introduce the concept of sato-yama-the harmonious borderland between mountains and arable valleys. This particular sato-yama has been inhabited since at least the Kofun period, over 1500 years ago. Lunch will be served at Flower Studio and Cafe Jin, a charming restaurant opened by a local chef who returned to his hometown to help rejuvenate the village. After lunch, you’ll visit an actual Kofun, an ancient burial mound, offering a rare insight into Japan’s early history.

Day 6 : Hike Up a Mountain Through Primeval Forest

Today, set out on a hike through a primeval forest, following a ridge that offers panoramic views of the sea and surrounding mountains. After your descent, you'll be transported to Mikata Goko, a stunning lake district near the coast. Relax and unwind at a hot spring hotel with a beautiful view of the lakes.
Accommodation: Hot Spring Hotel
Hiking: approx. 12 km

Day 7 : Pedal and Paddle

Start your day with a ride along a scenic cycling path that winds around two of the lakes and along the rugged coastline of the Tsunegami Peninsula. Enjoy a lunch of freshly caught seafood, then, depending on the weather and your preference, spend the afternoon paddling a stand-up paddleboard or sea kayak. After a final soak in the hot springs and a change of clothes, visit a local sake brewery before heading to Tsuruga, where you can catch the Bullet Train to Kanazawa or take an express train back to Kyoto.
